Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli

Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli (IOR) is the main Italian institute for orthopedics and traumatology. Since 1981 the Italian Health Ministry gave Rizzoli the status of Scientific research hospital.The core activity of IOR is translational research, being a real hinge-joint between scientific research and treatment of patients. The institute’s strength lays in close integration between operative assistential units (yearly about 150,000 treated patients and over 20,000 orthopedic surgeries/year) and scientific research, carried out in nine research laboratories employing a staff of 300 professionals (medical doctors, biologists, engineers, etc). High expertise, organization aimed at integration between research and treatment, high quality healthcare and innovative technologies in continuous evolution are Rizzoli’s  success in Italy and worldwide. IOR activities are featured by strong connection with industrial partners. IOR is the headquarter of many university courses, in association with Bologna University.

ROLE IN THE ADMAIORA PROJECT

IOR will be involved in the  WP 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Specifically, IOR will be lead beneficiary of WP6 and will contribute to:
1. define clinical critical issues and requirements to the development of the ADMAIORA technologies;

2. preclinical biological activities (cytotoxicity/ viability, biocompatibility and efficacy tests) required  to develop a degradable cell-friendly nanocomposite hydrogel which favor the regeneration of the cartilage tissue combining ultrasound stimulation.
